Breast and cervical cancers are the two most frequent types of cancers that strike Indian women, and according to Cancer India data, these two types of cancers accounted for more than 40% of new cancer cases in women in India in 2020 alone.
Dr Aswathy G Nath, Gynaecological Oncologist at Karkinos Healthcare, told HT Lifestyle, “This could be stopped only if women come forward for early screening of cancers on a regular basis, but unfortunately, regular health check-ups and regular cancer screening are non-existent for many women.” Late-stage cancer therapies have major financial and social consequences, and 70% of overall cancer cases in India have modifiable and preventable risk factors. In other terms, NCBI (National Centre for Biotechnology Information) claims that “preventable screening and healthy lifestyle choices could have prevented 70% of all cancer cases.”
“Simple lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and abstaining from tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption, can significantly reduce the risk of cancer,” she suggested. Women should also collaborate with their healthcare physician to determine a suitable screening regimen depending on their age, family history, and other risk factors. This can assist detect disease risk factors and enable for timely actions to avoid disease start. Women should also be aware of their own health and any risk factors that may apply to them, such as a family history of certain diseases. Women should advocate for their own health by asking questions, voicing concerns, and, if necessary, seeking second views. It is critical for people to be active participants in their own healthcare.They must also establish a support network of family, friends, and healthcare providers who may offer emotional and practical assistance as needed. Women should focus their health and well-being and make steps to reduce the cancer epidemic.
